http://www.npr.org/2010/11/23/131548353/making-peace-with-changing-sibling-roles- Here is a good article that I read about an adult woman and her developmentally handicapped sister. She talks about growing up and growing apart and struggles that she faces with herself towards her sister. I thought it was interesting.
Hi Nicole – Interesting article. It does make you think about families and siblings and how growing up changes the dynamics. The sibling of a person with a disability may take a very different path in life. This may cause guilt, sadness, confusion, and even a little relief at having an independent identity. Being in elementary education we focus on children with disabilities but those children eventually become adults. As future educators and members of society, it is important to have an understanding of ongoing or lifelong resources and supports available to families and the challenges that people face with disabilities throughout their lives.
